Purpose, Innovation and Intellectual Property, the three cornerstones of business
Purpose, Innovation and Intellectual Property, the three cornerstones of business

PONS IP, a global consulting firm specialising in intellectual property, held a conference at the headquarters of the PONS Foundation where innovation, purpose and intellectual property were the main protagonists thanks to the participation of three of the leading Spanish companies in this field: Fractus, Matteco and Veganic Nature

Luis Ignacio Vicente, Strategic Advisor at PONS IP, was in charge of welcoming the attendees and setting the context for the objective of the meeting, reminding them that “today’s businesses must integrate social and environmental objectives into their DNA, which will allow them to be more innovative and resilient to market changes”.In that sense, the representative of PONS IP emphasised that “numerous reports support the idea that companies with a clear and well-defined purpose tend to be more innovative and more resilient to market changes, to obtain better business results compared to those that do not have a purpose and, with the support of Intellectual Property, to expand their impact and move closer to their purpose as a company”.

Next, it was the turn to learn about the experiences and vision of the three guest companies that have made purpose and sustainability a strategic pillar of their business. Through their presentations and the discussion moderated by Rafael López, Director of PONS IP Valencia and Technology Transfer, the representatives of Veganic, Fractus and Matteco confirmed how socioeconomic and environmental impact is already acquiring a decisive role in the development of business projects capable of solving the great challenges we face as a society. “In all three projects, there is a clear integration of the three dimensions of sustainability: the economic, social and environmental dimensions,” said the director of the IP consulting firm.

Rubén Bonet, co-founder and CEO of Fractus, emphasised the importance of vision and talent in innovation: “A great idea is not enough. You have to surround yourself with an exceptional team, invest in R&D and have partners who believe in the project.” He added that success in protecting innovation lies in a solid intellectual property strategy: “Moving from an industrial model to a licensing-based business model is a complex but viable change if, as in our case, you have a portfolio of 120 patents that have allowed us to compete in key markets such as the United States, Europe and Asia. In this way, we not only protect our inventions, but we also reinforce our position in the sector.”

In turn, Carlos Ledó Orriach, as CEO of Veganic Nature, emphasised the value of a trademark as a strategic asset, but warned that “in a competitive market, a trademark alone is not enough; combining it with patents and trade secrets allows us to secure our advantage”. He explained that at Veganic Nature they have adopted a hybrid approach to protecting their innovation: “We use patents to safeguard our key technologies, while trade secrets allow us to protect strategic knowledge that we don’t want to disclose. This ensures that our investment in R&D translates into a differentiated and sustainable value over time,” concluded the head of Veganic Nature.

In the case of Iker Marcaide, founder of Matteco and president of Zubi Group, he emphasised the role of intellectual property in technological transformation: “Success is not an end in itself, but the consequence of a clear purpose. Our challenge is to become a platform for new materials with an impact beyond hydrogen.” He also highlighted the importance of sustainability in his company’s strategy: “We are facing a global challenge in the fight against climate change, and our vision is to develop innovative materials that not only reduce environmental impact, but also generate real change in industry.”

After the experts’ presentations, the day concluded with one certainty:  although purpose helps to drive innovation and guide companies towards the development of solutions by fostering creativity, it is intellectual property that ensures their strategic value, reinforces competitiveness and supports the sustainability of their business models in an increasingly demanding global environment.
