PONS IP, a global firm specializing in comprehensive advice on intellectual property and new technologies, has strengthened its leadership in the patents field, after topping the ranking as the most active Spanish firm in international patent applications via PCT. In four of the last five years, PONS IP has received this significant recognition for the intense activity carried out from the Patent Area for its network of national and international clients.
As confirmed by the specialist publication Managing Intellectual Property (MIP), a total of 105 applications for this type of intellectual property were promoted before the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) through PONS IP professionals during 2019. Due to its relevance, it is worth noting that our firm’s team, led by Patricia Ramos, was the only firm in Spain that has managed to exceed one hundred international patents applications during the year under analysis.
The main objective of the annual ranking is to acknowledge the performance of the most active IP agencies in the most innovative countries in the world. For its preparation, the editors of Managing Intellectual Property have counted all Patent applications filed throughout 2019 by the leading specialized firms in each market.
What are PCT International Patents?
The formula for obtaining an international patent via the PCT is one that is processed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Thanks to it, holders of intellectual property rights seek protection for their invention in a large number of countries simultaneously (153 countries in 2019), by submitting a single ‘international’ patent application. Also, the application is carried in just one of the languages accepted by the Office receiving the application. This system considerably simplifies the process of obtaining an international patent and, at the same time, is more cost-effective and efficient for the applicant.
