For the third consecutive year, PONS IP has once again become the Spanish intellectual property firm to file the largest number of Patent applications via PCT for its clients. The data were published by the Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) journal, in its December 2018 issue, as part of its annual PCT Survey.
This ranking surveys and recognises the work of the main intellectual property agencies in 22 regions and countries. To create it, the number of Patent applications filed during 2017 is examined. In PONS IP's case, a total of 93 applications were sent, placing the company 17 points above the next firm in the ranking.
The PCT procedure is an international patenting formula based on the Patent Cooperation Treaty. Its main feature is that it ensures protection for the owners of the invention in all the countries that are part of the Treaty (currently, 152) through a single application and in only one of the languages accepted by the Office receiving the application. This system considerably simplifies the process of obtaining an international patent and, at the same time, is more cost-effective and efficient for the applicant.
