Google has launched the .app domain extension, which will offer maximum security and positioning when promoting mobile applications on both Google Play and the App Store. The company took control of all the extensions three years ago now, participating in a very close auction with other Internet giants.
This new domain can be requested from 29 March through 1 May 2018 during the “sunrise” period. This means that, during this first stage, only registered trademark owners can apply for it.
As of that date, the Early Access period will begin, during which unbranded companies can apply for the .app extension at an additional fee. The extension will become freely available as of May 8th, and will follow the first come, first served rule.
The new extension is of great interest to all those companies that have a mobile application, as well as to app developers. For them, this extension will be the best showcase for their website, gaining in SEO positioning and also in security. In order to ensure the latter, Google has implemented a specific security protocol in all .app domains.
